Kaitaku no Haha statue (Rusutsu Furusato Park)

The story behind Kaitaku no Haha (Mother of Pioneering)

The Kaitaku no Haha statue in Rusutsu Furusato Park was built to symbolise the countless women involved in the early settlement of Rusutsu, including Kayo Iwasaki, the mother of the girl in the Akai Kutsu song, who spent her life believing her daughter had been taken to the US, when in fact she had became ill and died in an orphanage when she was nine – a sad story behind the hardship of early settlement.
